As of this past May, 8 New Yorkers have died from NYC traffic accidents, a 13% increase compared with the same time in 2021. Fatalities included a man on a motorized bike who was hit by a van making a left turn in a No Left Turn lane; and several pedestrians, one a result of a hit and run.
Critics claim that much of this is due to neighborhood neglect. In response to this increase in vehicle accidents, Mayor Eric Adams announced a $900 million investment in street plans which includes redesigning about 1,000 streets in order to make them safer.
Vehicle accidents involving pedestrians and cyclists continue to be a major problem in the 5 boroughs as well as Long Island. Unlike 2 vehicles colliding, pedestrians and cyclists have no buffer between themselves and a 1 or 2 ton car or truck. If you are hit as a pedestrian or cyclist, make sure to seek medical treatment as soon as possible, take photos, if you can, gather any witnesses, if you are able, then contact a personal injury attorney.
