While the NYPD and other safety advocates work to prevent left-turn accidents, it’s important for pedestrians to learn more about staying safe while walking in urban areas. Here are some tips to help pedestrians avoid a collision with a motor vehicle:
• Always look left, right, and then left again before you cross a street
• Try to make eye contact with drivers before you cross the street
• Don’t assume that you’re always safe when you are on a crosswalk—be alert
• Never wear headphones while you are walking
• Don’t attempt to cross the street if your view is blocked
• Never assume that a car will stop for you, even if you are on a crosswalk
• If there is a crosswalk available, only cross at that designated spot
• Try to wear brightly colored or reflective clothes
